Five-Year-Old Rescued from Pool in Gurnee, IL

Last evening, June 13th, 2024, at approximately 4:58 pm, the Gurnee Police and Fire Department were dispatched to an apartment complex located in the 6700 block of Derby Drive, where a five-year old was rescued from the bottom of a pool.

The child was discovered submerged in the pool by a bystander who immediately removed the child from the water and began administering CPR until emergency services arrived. There are no staffed lifeguards at the pool.

The child was unresponsive but breathing when fire department personnel arrived. Gurnee firefighters provided additional advanced life support care on-site before transporting the child to Condell Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

This incident highlights the critical importance of water safety, particularly during summer months when pools are in frequent use. The Gurnee Fire Department urges all caregivers to remain vigilant and implement appropriate safety measures when children are near water.

Fire Officials commend the swift actions of the bystander, as well as the rapid response of the Gurnee Police Department and the Gurnee Fire Department.
